S.E.E.D.: Jennifer

Meet Jennifer, our twentieth S.E.E.D. interviewee. Her headcovering testimony is full of strength and practical encouragement. We pray that, through her interview, you will be inspired by her sweetness and determination.

1) Tell us a little bit about yourself and your family.

I live on an  80-acre hobby farm in Alberta, Canada with my husband of 9 years, my three girls (homeschooled), and one on the way in early December.  My husband and I both came to know Yeshua as our Savior four years ago this Fall!

What is your favorite headcovering to wear and why?

I love the rectangular Israeli style scarves.  They are versatile, light-weight, colorful, can cover most of my hair in a snood-like pocket at the back, and best of all, I can tie them in a variety of styles that don’t fall off my head without the need for clippies and constant adjustments!  This is a MUST for me as the mom of several small children.  They also come in lots of vibrant, neat colors and patterns which I love!  I have to admit I prefer more dramatic coverings than plainer ones!

3) Do you cover at night also or during the day only?

I cover during the day only, but when I first started covering I often did cover at night because I was in intensive prayer for my husband’s salvation.  Thankfully he surrendered his life to the Lord only a month or two after I did!

4) How long have you been headcovering?

Since very early in my walk with Yeshua.  I think it was around two weeks or so after I was saved.

5) What made you decide to headcover?

I had come across a sub-forum of women online at a popular natural parenting forum who were believers.  Some of them covered, dressed modestly and advocated submission to husbands within marriage, some of them had also surrendered their family planning to the Lord.  The seeds these women planted in me were so instrumental in my early walk with Him.  Because I was saved outside of an organized body of believers I had little support in the early days when I was a new believer and my husband was very antagonistic to my beliefs; I turned to these women for support in how to deal with an unsaved husband.  The scriptures they shared were so helpful, and those scriptures in turn led me to 1 Corinthians 11.  I needed ALL the help I could get in the prayer and submission department, so it was a fairly simple choice for me to make.  That was over four years ago now.  I fully believe that my dependence on prayer and submission (which were only enhanced by covering) were what enabled the Spirit to work so quickly in my husband’s life!

6) Have you experienced any animosity from family members because of this decision? If so what have you done to deal with it?
Thankfully I haven’t experienced any persecution directly relating to headcovering.  Even when my husband was in direct opposition to my Christian beliefs he didn’t have a problem with my wearing a covering.  I do receive curious inquiries from time to time from friends, people I’ve just met or health care providers.  Normally I just say that I believe 1 Corinthians 11 in the Bible tells women to cover their heads.

7) What advice can you give to women who are covering?

Start with what you have!  Sometimes it can be so easy to get hung up on having the ‘right’ covering, but you can begin walking in obedience with simple solutions that are easily available.  Bandanas from your own wardrobe or from the local department/discount store are a good starter covering for many women; that’s what I began with!  DON’T try making your own until you have a good understanding of how coverings work best for you.  I made some HUGE, heavy, square coverings before I understood that bulkier fabrics are difficult to tie, slip off easier, and result in HUGE uncomfortable knots.  Try only one piece in a few different coverings before you invest in several pieces in a specific style.  Different coverings work differently on different head sizes and shapes, so it’s worthwhile experimenting.  What might look very cute on someone online might look rather dowdy on you (speaking from experience!)  Try one hanging veil and get a feel for it, try one woven scarf etc. that will help you to find your headcovering style without spending a large amount of money on coverings that ultimately don’t work well for you.

  2. Thanks for the interview. I am a bit on the fence about head-coverings and love hearing about other folks and their experiences. I will most likely end up covering full time...still looking for a scarf that stays on.
    Thanks again!
