S.E.E.D: Jocelin

Meet Jocelin, our fifteenth interviewee for the S.E.E.D. series. She's a bright and very capable woman who has a solid faith in Messiah. We're sure you'll enjoy reading her testimony as much as we did.

1) Tell us a little bit about yourself and your family

I am 25 years old, an only child, and live at home with my parents. I grew up in a Christian home. In the past five years, we as a family have gone back to understanding the importance of our Hebrew Roots, so we are now a Torah observant home. Our family just finished celebrating Sukkot or Feast of Tabernacles which is always a special time for us. It is wonderful that we are part of a group of like minded believers here in Ohio where I live. I work for Crown Financial Ministries (www.crown.org) as the Money Map Coach Manager from my home and where I have the privilege of helping people understand finances from a Biblical perspective and work to get out of debt. I also have my own website design business – Web Design by JB (www.webdesignbyjb.com). Our family lives on a small family farm with 3 cows, 30+ chickens, and 4 cats, so we enjoy growing and producing a good portion of our food. Over the years, I have also learned many different hand crafts such as cake decorating, sewing, crochet, etc.

2) What is your favorite headcovering to wear and why?

I really like the Israeli style headcoverings. They are lightweight yet you can’t see through them. They also hold in place very well for me. I have long thick hair, so it’s important to me that it is long enough to cover my hair fully. I also sew my own Charity type covering which I pin on or a triangular version which I tie on. Both of these work well with a stretchy type fabric. In the winter, I will wear a 100% woven acrylic covering that I found in Amish country.

3) Do you cover at night also or during the day only?

I only cover during the day. I do make sure that I have had my quiet time and prayer time before I take down my hair and remove my covering though.

4) How long have you been headcovering?

For about 10 years now.

5) What made you decide to headcover?

In 2000, while my family was visiting a Mennonite church, we were challenged about the head covering and modest dress. We were often told it was a “church rule” which wasn’t a good enough reason for us, so we began searching Scripture. After thoroughly studying out 1 Corinthians 11, I was convicted. I started wearing the covering at that point. I was 15 years old. I also got the book called Let Her Be Veiled which was a great help in understanding it even more. My mom began covering soon after me.

6) Have you experienced any animosity from family members because of this decision?  If so what have you done to deal with it?

Yes, when my uncle who is not a believer first saw me he wanted to know if we had gone and become a part of a cult. I kindly responded to him that we had not but that we understood the Scriptures in 1 Corinthians to mean a literal covering. I have also been asked if I am catholic or occasionally if I am Muslim of which I patiently explain I am a believer in the Messiah, 1 Corinthians, and then answer any questions they may have.

7) What advice can you give to women who are covering?

First of all, be sure you understand why you are covering and be prepared to kindly answer both genuine questions and critical questions. A kind answer turns away wrath. Second, as a single young woman like me, make sure you are doing so under your authority’s approval. Even though I was convicted of it, I made sure that my dad was alright with it which he was. Our authorities are there for our protection. And finally, keep a close relationship with YHVH. When you are walking close with your Heavenly Father, His love will shine through you which will make the headcovering even more beautiful.
